Peacebuilding, Conflict Resolution & UN Peacekeeping Support Team
An operational unit of the Global Initiatives Division, developing international frameworks for conflict prevention, mediation, and post-conflict reconstruction — supporting UN peacekeeping operations and building the durable peace that prevents the recurrence of armed conflict and the humanitarian catastrophes it generates.
Mission & Operational Scope
Building Peace That Lasts Beyond the Ceasefire
Armed conflict is the most acute form of human suffering — and the most preventable. The international community has developed sophisticated tools for conflict prevention, mediation, and post-conflict reconstruction, but their deployment is often too late, too under-resourced, or too poorly coordinated to prevent conflicts from escalating or recurring. UN peacekeeping operations protect civilians and create space for political solutions, but they require adequate mandates, resources, and political support to succeed. Post-conflict reconstruction requires sustained investment in the institutions, economic opportunities, and reconciliation processes that address the root causes of conflict.
This team develops the international frameworks that strengthen conflict prevention, improve peacekeeping effectiveness, and build the durable peace that prevents the recurrence of armed conflict.

Operational Capabilities
Six Core Functions
01
Conflict Early Warning & Prevention
Develop international conflict early warning and prevention frameworks — establishing the monitoring systems, diplomatic trigger mechanisms, and preventive deployment protocols that allow the international community to act before conflicts escalate to armed violence.
02
Mediation & Good Offices Support
Develop international mediation and good offices frameworks — building the mediator training standards, process design protocols, and institutional support mechanisms that improve the effectiveness of international mediation in active conflicts.
03
UN Peacekeeping Reform
Advocate for and develop UN peacekeeping reform frameworks — improving mandate clarity, troop contributor capacity building, and accountability mechanisms that make peacekeeping operations more effective at protecting civilians and creating conditions for political solutions.
04
Post-Conflict Reconstruction Standards
Develop international post-conflict reconstruction standards — establishing the sequencing frameworks, institution-building protocols, and economic recovery programs that address the root causes of conflict and reduce the high rate of conflict recurrence.
05
Transitional Justice Frameworks
Develop international transitional justice frameworks — establishing the truth commission standards, reparations mechanisms, and accountability processes that address past atrocities in ways that support reconciliation and durable peace rather than entrenching grievance.
06
Women, Peace & Security Implementation
Develop international frameworks for implementing the Women, Peace and Security agenda — ensuring women's meaningful participation in peace negotiations, peacekeeping operations, and post-conflict governance as both a rights obligation and a proven predictor of durable peace.
